How do you avoid taking a role with a sh*t business? Heres some basic tips.....
I'm firmly of the belief that people accept roles way too easily. As recently as this morning I met a superb human who is about to accept a role with a business I know to be toxic and broken. So, how do you avoid taking a role with a shit business? Heres some basic tips.....
1) Call a couple of people who have left the company. one of the joys of the internet, apart from funny cat memes, is the ability to find and contact ex -employees, so reverse reference an employer by talking to people who have moved on.
2) The numbers don't lie. If the role you are looking at has had a new person in it every 12 months, then take this as a very bad sign
3) The roles been vacant for longer than 3 months. Because the immediate industry around it knows its rubbish and no-ones applying, or the leadership team is incapable of making a decision. Either way not so attractive any more eh!
4) Assuming its a recruiter, ask them how many people they have placed with this business. How many are still there? Can they refer internal connections who will help you make a decision? Why is the role vacant?
5) Look closely at the product offering. How relevant is it to the market? A recent role I saw advertised is as Sales Manager for a virtually unspecifiable product range given recent code changes, do your research with the end user or client base to ensure the company isn't looking to fix an untenable market position by throwing a person at it.
6) Ambitious? Think hard. The company must have a demonstrable track record of promoting people. This can be qualified by simply asking the question, who are the last two people you promoted, and when were these promotions? Also, avoid flat structures. Their should be at least two or three roles about/above you in the org structure that you can work towards.
These and other things will help you read the warning signs.
